Bug Collection Kit

A small field kit for collecting and preserving interesting arthropods I encounter on the trail — vials, forceps, and a magnifier for up-close inspection.

Why It Makes The Cut

My bug collection kit is a small field-ready package I carry on every hike for grabbing interesting arthropod specimens I encounter along the trail. It includes a set of glass and plastic vials in various sizes — some pre-filled with ethanol for wet preservation, others empty for live transport — along with fine-tipped forceps, a jeweler's loupe magnifier, and a few small zip bags for larger specimens or molts. I built the kit over time based on what I actually needed in the field rather than buying a pre-made set, which means everything in it earns its space. When I spot something worth collecting — an unusual beetle, a spider I cannot identify on sight, or a particularly striking moth resting on a cedar trunk — I can have it secured in a vial within seconds without damaging delicate structures. The whole kit fits in a zippered pouch about the size of a paperback book, and it tucks into a side pocket of my Peak Design pack where I can reach it without breaking stride.
