First Impressions

I bought this lens because I could not justify paying double for the Sony GM version, and I half-expected to feel like I was compromising. I was wrong. The build quality is excellent, with a solid metal barrel, weather sealing, and a de-clickable aperture ring that video shooters will appreciate. At 735 grams it is lighter than its predecessor and feels well-balanced on a full-frame Sony body. The High-Response Linear motor snaps to focus almost silently, and the zoom ring has a smooth, well-damped feel without any creep.

In the Field

This is my "I don't know what I'm going to shoot today" lens, and it excels in that role. For landscapes, it is sharp across the frame from 24mm through 70mm, though I tend to stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 where it really sings. What surprised me most is how capable it is for close-up work — at the 24mm end you get roughly 1:2.7 magnification with a very short working distance, which lets me grab detail shots of wildflowers or insects in a pinch without swapping to a dedicated macro lens. At 70mm you still get about 1:4 reproduction with more comfortable working distance. It is not a replacement for a true macro, but it fills in admirably when I am already carrying a heavy pack and need versatility over specialization.

Verdict

This lens delivers roughly 90 percent of the G Master's optical performance at about half the cost, and for most real-world shooting that remaining 10 percent is invisible. It has become my default walkabout lens for trail scouting, travel, and any outing where I want one lens that can handle landscapes, environmental portraits, and the occasional close-up detail shot. If you are building a Sony kit on a budget — or just prefer to spend the savings on a plane ticket to somewhere worth photographing — the Sigma 24-70 Art is one of the smartest buys in the E-mount ecosystem.
