Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter
A compact teleconverter that extends the reach of compatible lenses by 1.4x with only a single stop of light loss. Paired with the 200-600mm, it provides an impressive 280-840mm range.

First Impressions
The first thing that struck me about the Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter is just how small and light it is. It adds only about 0.68 inches of length and 5.8 ounces to the overall setup, so mounting it between the body and the 200-600mm barely changes the handling feel. The build quality is exactly what you would expect from Sony — solid metal construction, weather sealing, and a reassuring click when it locks into place. I appreciate that it transforms my 200-600mm into a 280-840mm lens with just a single stop of light loss, bringing the maximum aperture to f/8-9 at the long end. For the price and the reach it adds, the size-to-benefit ratio is genuinely impressive.
In the Field
Paired with the 200-600mm for wildlife, the 1.4x teleconverter has been a game-changer for those situations where I just need a bit more reach. In bright, well-lit conditions the autofocus behaves almost identically to the bare lens — it locks on quickly and tracks moving subjects without hesitation. Things get trickier in lower light or overcast conditions, where the AF can start hunting more noticeably, and my keeper rate on fast-moving birds drops a bit. I have found that stopping down to f/11 or even f/13 on crisp, clear days yields razor-sharp results, while shooting wide open at f/9 can be a little soft depending on atmospheric conditions. The key takeaway is that patience and good light are your best friends with this combo — when conditions cooperate, the results are stunning and nearly indistinguishable from cropping into the bare lens at shorter range.
